--- What is SeriousRP? ---
So you've just got into a whole new level of roleplay, known as "SeriousRP".
As the name already says it, "SeriousRP" is very serious regarding the player's ingame behaviour in this particular roleplay gamemode. You as the player must basically behave in roleplay situations like you would if everything experienced in the server would happen in real life. Compared to DarkRP servers you will experience far more restrictions in gameplay, enforced by dedicated admins, in favor of realism. You're no Rambo, in the most cases you're no elite soldier. Mostly you can't carry guns and walk around the city in a rebel suit. Being afraid of pain and death is crucial in this gamemode; nobody wants to die and would do anything to escape a dire situation. No running away or doing any daring moves if someone points with a gun at you. You hopefully get the point.
This guide will gloss the most used terms in SeriousRP communities for you.
--- --- ---
--- In-Character (IC) ---
"In-Character" is also known as "InRP" and "IC". In-Character means that you are roleplaying as your character, not acting as yourself, the player. Imagine that you are a citizen of Earth under the rule of evil alien invaders - the Combine. There are no "cops", only Civil Protection - the "police" force installed under the new poppet government. It's up to you if you want to join those, or you want to fight against those. You can also stay neutral and be a normal everyday citizen, "passing on his way towards unknown".
In IC chat, you're saying things coming from your character's mouth, not your's. Naturally you may not use emoticons in this chat (like "XD") or anything similar. Allowed chat commands are: "/me" (for personal actions), "/it" (for world actions), "/an" (for anonymous actions), "/y" (for yelling) and "/w" (for whispering).
--- Out-Of-Character (OOC) ---
"Out-Of-Character" is also known as "OutOfRP" and "OOC". Out-Of-Character means you are writing as yourself in the chat, not as your current character, for example asking everyone in the server: "How are you guys/gals?", greeting a player and so on. OOC chat will appear on everyone's chat console, meaning that everyone will see what you have typed in that chat. You can also joke, talk about something, plan an event and similar matters.
A variant of OOC is "Local-Out-Of-Character" (LOOC). This type of OOC differs in the range of talking, for example when writing to a little crowd (3-4 players, not the whole server). You can use LOOC so you don't flood the server's OOC chat for no reason. The chat commands are: "//" (for OOC messages), ".//" (for LOOC messages), "/pm [name]" (for personal messages) and "/a" (for messages addressed to admins).
--- --- ---
--- Deathmatch (DM) ---
"Deathmatch" is normally described as a fight in common consent between two players or more (respectively between two teams or more) until death or a certain kill-count. The violent encounters between Combines and the Resistance can be described as deathmatch situations.
However, many players use the term "Deathmatch" or "DM" in OOC chat with the meaning of "RandomDeathmatch" or "RDM" behind [see "RandomDeathmatch" entry]. Be cautious about this.
--- RandomDeathmatch (RDM) ---
"RandomDeathmatch" or "RDM", sometimes known as "Deathmatch" or "DM" [see "Deathmatch" entry], describes a random attack of a character on another without any roleplay reasons or beyond any logical context, f.e. when a Civil Protection officer shoots a passing by citizen. Deathmatch isn't allowed on any SeriousRP servers and counts as FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
Be aware, in thein the event of an Autonomous Judgement Waiver (Combines are allowed to kill any civilians on sight for security reasons) the prohibition of RDM doesn't apply.
--- --- ---
--- FearRoleplay (FearRP) ---
"FearRoleplay" or "FearRP" describes the community's expectation that every character is ultimately afraid of imminent pain or death, doing anything to escape this fate, irrelevant how tough, self-composed and/or hard-handed the character normally behaves. Doing otherwise counts as FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
--- PainRoleplay (PainRP) ---
"PainRoleplay" or "PainRP" is the enactment of IC physical injuries to your character in your following roleplay actions. When you as your character get injured ingame, you mostly only loose health points and get temporal speed cutbacks without any further consequences. To provide a more immersive roleplay atmosphere to other players you could perform PainRP with your character's injured body parts, additionally to FearRP [see "FearRoleplay" entry]. --- PassiveRoleplay (PassiveRP) ---
"PassiveRoleplay" or "PassiveRP" describes a roleplay style where the player uses "/me" and "/it" chat commands to describe his character's actions to other surrounding persons although nobody directly interacts with him. This supports an immersive roleplay atmosphere ingame.
--- NewLifeRule (NLR) ---
"NewLifeRule" or "NLR" means that the player's character looses in the case of death all knowledge he gained during his "last life", including names, characters, unobvious locations or information gained from investigations.
Excluded from forgeting are memories about your organization members and standard information crucial for your character's "functioning". Keeping other knowledge after death is a case of MetaGaming [see "MetaGaming" entry] and FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
--- Voiding (Void) ---
"Voiding" or "Void" describes the act of revoking your character's last roleplay actions for story development reasons. Every partaking character in the roleplay scene, if all players agree, immediatly "forgets" the voided actions and resumes the roleplay from the moment before the void.
Sometimes players use the term "void" to cover up FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry], intended or not, so roleplay can continue. Abuse of voiding as an excuse for "jokes" or trolling results in punishments for the player.
--- Player-/PermaKill (PK) ---
"PlayerKill", "PermaKill" or "PK" describes the permanent deletion of a player's character either as a punishment for misbehaviour ingame (heavy cases of FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry]) or as a method of story development, f.e. when a rogue Civil Protection officer is captured and executed.--- Kill-On-Sight (KOS) ---
"Kill-On-Sight" or "KOS" means, as the name already says, the immediate attack of a character on other when detected. This doesn't have to be a case of RDM because there are many situations when KOS can rightfully apply:
If you're a rebel (fully uniformed), getting outside your hiding place will get you KOS'd or AOS'd (arrested on sight).
When you're a non-slave Vortigaunt, you are automatically KOS'd as you constitute a real threat to Combine forces.
When you're a citizen, you may get KOS'd during a JW, being found in a locked down area or when you're armed.
Being found as a citizen/rebel/Vortigaunt by Combine forces during an AJ (Autonomous Judgement Waiver).
--- --- ---
--- FailRoleplay (FailRP) ---
"FailRoleplay" or "FailRP" describes a deliberate or unintended misbehaviour during roleplay situations. While some misconceptions can be resolved by repeating a roleplay scene after an explanation from fellow players, a wilful and repeating disrupting of roleplay mostly results in a ban of the player for various timespans or even perma-bans (permanent bans).
FailRP includes ignorance of rules regarding FearRP [see "FearRoleplay" entry], RDM [see "RandomDeathmatch" entry], ERP (see "EroticRoleplay" entry] and general misbehaviour like bad IC spelling and/or grammar, engaging in petty OOC quarrels and BunnyHopping [see "BunnyHopping" entry].
--- EroticRoleplay (ERP) ---
"EroticRoleplay" or "ERP" describes the act of having an IC sex roleplay situation with another character. This type of RP should normally be done in private with /pm messages as publicly doing ERP is FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
However, many SeriousRP server do not allow this form of roleplay at all, including the CombineControl server - unless an admin starts a custom event.
--- MetaGaming (MG) ---
"MetaGaming", also known as "Meta" or "MG", describes the IC use of roleplay information acquired through OOC means like the LOOC/OOC chat, and counts as FailRP [see "FailRolepllay" entry].
An example is:
Reading someone's name just above their model, without knowing the person personally ingame, yet using the name in IC chat. Or a Civil Protection officer updating someone's criminal record without knowing their IC name/CID.
MetaGaming doesn't apply in organizations you are enlisted. You always know your organization members, no matter if you died (no NLR regarding member names [see "NewLifeRule" entry]).--- PowerGaming (PG) ---
"PowerGaming" or "PG" describes the act of forcing your IC actions onto others and counts as FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
Example: "/me pats down the citizen and finds every weapon he has."
The player didn't let the other player roll to hide a weapon ("/roll" command generates numbers from 0 to 100; when both player "roll", the highest number wins), he has just stated that his character found every gun the other player's character has.
--- BunnyHopping (BH) ---
"BunnyHopping" or "BH" means repeatedly jumping in a zig-zag style while running. Players usually use it to avoid getting shot or to move along faster than running normally. This counts as FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
--- SpawnKill (SK) ---
"SpawnKill" or "SK" describes the act of deliberate killing of characters at spawn-points, sometimes repeatedly, giving the respawning characters no chance to roleplay. This counts as a heavy case of FailRP [see "FailRoleplay" entry].
